Filming of Red River
Posted on June 11, 2024When the Boice family owned the Empire Ranch many Western movies were filmed at the ranch and nearby areas. One of the most iconic is Red River (1948) directed by Howard Hawks and starring John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Joanne Dru, and Walter Brennan. Location work began in early September of 1946 and was projected to take about eight weeks.

Book a Trail Ride
Posted on May 29, 2024Take a 45-minute trail ride ($45) at National Day of the Cowboy.
Riders must be age 8 or older; a parent/guardian must ride with children under 18 years of age. First ride of the day is at 8 am; last ride at noon.
A Star is Born
Posted on May 19, 2024Plan to attend the Saturday, September 28, 2024 showing of A Star Is Born (1976) featuring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. Troubled rock star John Norman Howard (Kristofferson) meets and mentors talented singer Esther Hoffman (Streisand) and puts her on the path to stardom. Admission to the outdoor showings is free. Bring your own seating, food & flashlights. Snacks and water will be available for purchase.
National Day of the Cowboy

Ulzana’s Raid

Marti Conroy Honored
Posted on April 5, 2024Congratulations to Marti Conroy who received the 2024 Richard (Rich) Fedele Award for Outstanding Excellence in the Support of the Southern Arizona Attractions Alliance (SAAA). An Empire Ranch Foundation board member since 2017, Marti has taken a leadership role in promoting the Empire Ranch via marketing and outreach activities. She greatly deserves this recognition from SAAA for her strong commitment and positive impact on the attractions industry of southern Arizona and the historic Empire Ranch.

Posted on February 29, 2024A selection of Alan Nyiri’s remarkable images of the historic Empire Ranch buildings and the LCNCA landscape are on display and available for purchase in the Empire Ranch Gift Shop.
Alan Nyiri, Las Cienegas National Conservation Area site host and accomplished fine art photographer, is the first artist in residence appointed by the Bureau of Land Management—Tucson Field Office.

Spring Trail Ride, April 6, 2024
Posted on February 6, 2024Sixty-five riders participated in the Empire Ranch Spring Trail Ride on April 6, 2024. It was a beautiful day and the event was a great success! Special thanks to Faith Boice who led the 3-hour ride and Rick Collins who led the 1.5 hour ride. The BBQ lunch was deemed delicious by everyone.

National Public Lands Day Education Program
Posted on January 4, 2024On October 26, 2023, 150 4th graders from Desert Willow Elementary School in Vail spent the day at Empire Ranch Headquarters learning about National Public Lands Day and Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. Students rotated through five stations staffed by BLM and Foundation experts. The Empire Ranch history station was located at the Tack Room where the students learned about branding and other ranching equipment.
